Rand Paul

Committees/ Subcommittees

Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions: this committee studies and reviews matters relating to health, education and training, and public welfare.
  • Paul is Chairman of the subcommittee, Children and Families.
    • The Subcommittee has jurisdiction over a wide range of issues including Head Start, child care and child support such as the Child Care & Development Block Grant, the Family Medical Leave Act, National Service, women and children’s healthcare, and other issues involving children, youth, and families.
    • this subcommittee holds hearings but hasn't held one since 2014 & only 2 bills have ever been referred to this subcommittee. (govtrack.us is a reliable source as it tracks the entire United States Congress activity.
    • It is important that Paul is involved on this committee because it proposes change in the health care system and minimum wage, two things that are very controversial right now as we discuss the Affordable Care Act. People see that he is involved with this and wanting to provide the ultimate best for the people.
Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs: purpose is to provide safety for the people.

  • Paul is Chairman of the subcommittee, Federal Spending Oversight and Emergency Management.
    • there is no recent activity of the subcommittee and no bills have ever been referred to it but being apart of this committee helps Rand Paul as it shows the people that he is interested in the safety of Americans- especially after the 9/11 attacks; this committee pushes Homeland Security.
Senate Committee on Foreign Relations: this committee considers, debates, and reports important treaties and legislation dealing with foreign relations and policy.

  • Paul is a member of the following subcommittees
    • Africa and Global Health Policy: recently met on March 19th
    • Europe and Regional Security Cooperation: recently met on March 4th to examine Russian aggression in Eastern Europe.
    • Near East, South Asia, Central Asia, and Counterterrorism
    • State Department and USAID Management
  • Being involved in these subcommittees and committee helps Paul because he has a global responsibility for health- related policy, including diseases and outbreaks. With the recent Ebola outbreak, him being involved shows he is trying to help.
Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship: through loans and enterprise programs,  they help keep small businesses alive.
  • Being on this committee, Paul shows he doesn't just advocate for the top one percent and the wealthy but instead wants to keep small businesses afloat, and stress the American Dream- which is a lot more relatable to most Americans.

Rand Paul: Electoral Circumstances
"A Clear Vision For Kentucky."

Looking at the Primary and General Election, it looks as if Senator Rand Paul will win and renew his seat. He is now more so focused on the Presidential Election. He has been attending events suchs as the Conservative Political Action Conference, in hopes to get votes for the potential bid of the Republican Party in the Presidential Race according to Reuters. Rand, because looking for re-election in Senate and bid for President has asked the Kentucky GOP to change the state's presidential nominating contest from a primary to a caucus in 2016.

Here, he outdistanced most of his competitors by taking 25.7 percent of the vote. The only thing that is worrisome about this is his libertarian views may not appeal to a lot of the Republican Party. Although he did win the straw vote, that does not necessarily identify him as the next Republican nominee.

It's also interesting because in Paul's first Congressional Election, he was overshadowed by higher-profile allies. The first two years into his career, he was not a major player in the political world. It wasn't until he filibustered a nominee to bring attention to the federal government's droning program.
His numbers then shot up making him popular in the Republican Party-- popular enough to win the bid.
He is running neck and neck with New Jersey Governor, Chris Christie and former Florida Governor, Jeb Bush. (They're all undeclared established candidates for 2016 Republican Presidential Nominee)

2012:
In the 2012 Presidential Election, Kentucky voted for Mitt Romney over Barack Obama with a 61% to 39%. With this much of a difference, and only 4 of 120 counties voting Obama, Kentucky will most likely vote Republican once again.

Major Issues:
-An issue that could help shape the election is Paul's stance with Israel & National Security Issues-- he wants to prevent a nuclear war with Iran.
-He also could win liberal voters as his position on same-sex marriage opposes any federal action to prevent it. On the contrary, you could lose some conservative Republicans because of this.

RANDS IDEAS
